KnightsMind –The Emerald Knights’ war call is “Strength and Honor”, I became the Director of Operations working for two kick ass commanders, “BC” Lacy and “Jethro” Schroeder. Both were talented fighter pilots, and both knew how to take care of their squadron.  The knights are a replacement training unit (RTU) located at Luke AFB in Arizona; their mission is to teach brand new guys how to fly F-16s. I had a fantastic bunch of guys working for me there: “Fester”, “Chester”, “Chief”, “Skrull”, “Mullet”, and “Nugget” to name a few. “Chief” is a Marine Corps F-18 hornet pilot and was on an exchange tour with the USAF. Being resourceful in the fighter world opens up opportunities, including training opportunities. Chief is resourceful, and he managed to get the Knights an invite to the TOPGUN fly in, an invite only event to bring together kick ass fighter pilots flying against the Navy and Marine Corps’ best. Fighter pilots are also competitive, so I went over and talked to my Maintenance Chief, Chief Master Sergeant Knott about our aircraft configurations. Truth be told, our maintainers are also competitive and they don’t like to see their pilots lose, so Chief Knott removed every bit of drag and slicked down the airplanes to rails and guns. We call that a clean configuration, and every fighter pilot loves it because the jet is so much more maneuverable. The Knights arrived on station at Fallon Air patch in Nevada, and of course I stacked the deck with not only clean jets, but I brought my five best guys. We kicked some serious ass that weekend, and left with an undefeated record, that is except for Chief our USMC pilot.  We all had a good laugh at that. Not to be outdone though, Chief left me a little present as I went off to command the 310 Fighter Squadron, The Top Hats. I will leave that story for another post, but let’s just say the gift is still in circulation, and to gain the upper hand requires a great deal of resourcefulness. Something we can all learn to use everyday.

Spirit – Gus has always been the free spirited dog.  I think he decided to go on a walk about to find his brother.  It landed him in jail, but at least we found him safe!
