Burning Old Piano - Another Fighter Pilot tradition

Burning Old Piano – Another Fighter Pilot tradition

Mind – I am going to continue the Poacher and Homer week with a funny story about an Elk hunting trip we took with Poacher’s Dad, Big Jerry. Again it was up in the Mountains of Idaho late in the fall. The terrain was amazing but we were above the snow line and the trip was planned for a week. Poacher stuffed his Bronco full of everything, food, beer, whiskey, and firewood, everything you could possibly want. We spent a couple of days scouting before the season opened and we were sure we had a fantastic spot picked out. Getting to it was another story, it took 2-3 hours of hiking through pretty deep snow. Poacher put on his standard ramrod hat to ensure we were ready for the opening shots. We had spotted a whole herd of elk the previous day, so Poacher woke us all up at midnight to make sure we got into position in plenty of time. We were all ready, then just prior to shooting time in came a bunch of yocals riding their pack horses, crashing about, and smoking. Needless to say, the elk also heard them coming and weren’t sticking around to find out what was up. For three days this act continued and we were having no luck finding the elk. Undeterred Poacher and Big Jerry continued the midnight wakeups, but on the 4th day the AJAX/Homer mutiny occurred. Homer and I decided we were taking a rest day in camp. Poacher and Big Jerry pushed on intrepidly while Homer and I stoked up the fire and cracked a few beers, and waited…and waited. About 8 hours later Poacher and Big Jerry returned to the camp, cold, tired, hungry, and empty handed. That wasn’t their only problem, Homer and I had pretty much burned ever stick of firewood we had, finished off all the Natty Lights, and were now working on the surviving bottle of Jack Daniels. They were a little pissed, and if you listen to Poacher tell the story, he and Jerry returned to Homer and I yelling “more whiskey” shooting up the camp. It is a story to remember, but not just because Homer and I drank all the booze and burned everything.  It was a trip to remember because it was the last one Poacher got to spend with Big Jerry. Time on this planet is precious, so go do those things you been thinking about and squeeze the ones you love.

Spirit – In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
