Mind – Maverick and Goose got their dream shot flying with the best of the best. But who really is the best? Most fighter pilots will respond in the first person if asked. But between Navy and AF, I am biased, AF all the way. Anecdotally, via the two Top Gun invitational tournaments my squadron flew in, we remained undefeated; that is except for my Marine Corps exchange pilot Chief. I can also say having attended the Air Force’s Fighter Weapons School, the instructors at both Top Gun and Weapons School are truly the best of the best. Ajax B. (the other AJAX) was an instructor at Fighter Weapons School, and that guy is a phenomenal fighter pilot, along with Rowdy, Nut, Pee Wee, Thirty and many more. Here’s the other thing I’d always put my money on, any American fighter pilot. Why? Because the fighter pilots that I know love to compete, they strive to improve at everything they do, they care about what they do, they are true professionals, and they aren’t afraid to work until the job is done, and finally…we never quit! I will bust one myth, the shenanigans that Maverick pulled is total B.S., tower flyby stunts is a sure way to be grounded permanently and possibly even be court-martialed. So I can’t really settle who’s the “Best of the Best” for you all, but I will say I am damn glad I’m on Team USA with Red, White and Blue fighter pilots.
